Holding Down Health Costs Painlessly
Some health experts are trying to convince Congress that slowing growth of health spending can be painless, even as the government struggles to cut back a health sector that by 2025 could consume a quarter of the nation’s economic output.
Len Nichols of the New America Foundation says, healthcare overhaul proposals do not mean long waits for care or draconian cuts to payments to doctors and hospitals, as high-quality care from far fewer resources can be delivered, by organizing one’s processes right.
The key is to get doctors and hospitals in the parts of the country spending the most on medical care, to bring that spending more in line with that of lower-spending regions. Surveys show that patients living in the lower spending areas, do just as well as those where spending is higher, showing more is not always better.
