Police in Budapest prepare for rally by far right Jobbik party
Hungarian police announced on Saturday that five people had been arrested in the run up to a rally by the far-right party Jobbik, which plans to protest "police terror" and the outlawing of its paramilitary offshoot, the Hungarian Guard.
Budapest Chief of Police Gabor Toth has ordered heightened surveillance in the centre of the Hungarian capital for 24 hours until midnight.
National Police Chief Jozsef Bencze said on Friday that, in addition to the Jobbik rally, some 50 other groups have announced they would be holding demonstrations in Budapest on Saturday, and a further 21 around the country.
An "anti-fascist" demonstration in central Budapest on Saturday morning was attended only by around one hundred people.
A demonstration by Jobbik's paramilitary Hungarian Guard last Saturday was broken up by police, who had set up cordons and deployed hundreds of officers in riot gear in the centre of the Hungarian capital.
The leader of Jobbik, Gabor Vona, was among those held by the police before being released without charge several hours later.
Vona claims the outlawing of the Hungarian Guard and his arrest were politically motivated, and that the police used undue force in breaking up the demonstration.
Jobbik last month won three of Hungary's 22 seats in the European Parliament. MEP Krisztina Morvai is due to speak at the rally which begins at 5 pm (1500 GMT) on Saturday.
The Hungarian guard was outlawed on July 2 when a court of appeal upheld a ruling from December that the organization had intimidated and violated the human rights of Roma villagers by holding a rally against "Gypsy crime" in 2007.
The organization's black and white uniform reminds some of the Second World War Hungarian fascist Arrow Cross.
Gabor Vona, a founder and the leader of the Hungarian Guard, insists the uniform is based on traditional Hungarian peasant costume.
