Warship 'The New York' Commissioned, Incorporates Steel from World Trade Center
On Saturday, the Navy's newest warship, The New York, a $1 Billion manufacture which incorporates 7.5 tons of steel from the World Trade Center, was commissioned. The ceremony was an emotional one for the country and the ship is being viewed as a symbol of fortitude.
"The New York will be a visible testament to our resilience", said Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. Cmdr. Curt Jones, who is also a native New Yorker, took command. The ceremony was held at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum and was attended by over 6,000 people. Secretary of State Clinton, who also delivered the keynote address, Gov. Paterson and Mayor Bloomberg were included in the elite list of attendees.
The ship boasts a crew of nearly 360 sailors and will, until Thursday, be docked at Pier 88, after which it will sail to its home port at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia. The ship is being viewed as an embodiment of "the strength and perseverance" of all the people who had lost their lives in the September 11 attacks.
