Low-Carb Diets Make You Glum
Studies reveal low-carb diets that limit foods like breads, pasta, and sugar are extremely effective for weight loss in the short-term, though there’s evidence remaining on one can make you glum.
Studying over 100-over weight adults, Australian researchers assigned half of them to a low-carb diet and the other half to a low-fat one. On average, both groups lost the same amount of weight i. e. 30-lbs. Both groups experienced mood improvement, initially, however, by year-end, those on the low-fat diet continued feeling good, while the mood of those on the low-carb diet turned more negative.
According to Dr. Caroline Apovian, Director of Nutrition and Weight Management at Boston Medical Centre, serotonin, the feel good brain chemical or neurotransmitter involved in mood, probably, plays a role.
While, low-carb diets are tremendous for losing weight, sometimes when serotonin levels drop, people need carbohydrates to keep in good mood.
Since, everybody is different, most often genetics dictate what meal plan is best for you. According to Dr. Apovian, a wide variety of foods with lean proteins and lots of fruits and vegetables is a good diet for an average person. While, refined carbs like white breads, white pasta, and sweets can be eliminated, it is important to have one to two whole grain servings every day.
