Kryptonite Glue Heals Breastbone After Surgery
Dr. Paul Fedak, a Calgary cardiac surgeon taking a page out of the Superman comics, has discovered a better way for helping patients who undergo median sternotomy during open heart surgery, to recover from it by using adhesive polymer, called Kryptonite bone cement, on over 20-patients to repair the sternum.
In order to gain access to the heart, doctors cut the sternum in half, traditionally repairing it with Sternum Wires twisted around the bone to keep both sides together.
While, the old method as a rule works well, it the bones come apart, this can result in intense pain which hampers the patients' ability to heal, including resulting in further complications like pneumonia.
The Kryptonite glue Kryptonite allows the breast bone to stay together within hours, instead of several weeks, which reduces pain, helps heal quickly, including allowing patients to breathe deeply cough right away. Patients reported far less pain and discomfort and did not require strong pain medication like narcotics.
Having used bone cement only on a limited basis, Dr. Fedak is starting a worldwide study for verifying its benefits.
Other doctors in Calgary have also reported using Kryptonite to fix broken ribs.
