Portland Opens First Marijuana Cafe In USA
The Obama administration's relaxation of the policing of the medical use of marijuana saw USA's first marijuana cafe named The Cannabis Cafe open Friday in Portland, Oregan.
Despite the federal ban, it is the first place that will allow certified medical marijuana users to obtain the drug and smoke it, out of public view and represents personal freedom to members of NORML, a group that pushes for marijuana legalization.
The cafe will go beyond just serving food and marijuana, holding classes, seminars and even setting up a Cannabis Community College for helping people learn how to grow and other uses for cannabis.
There is a monthly membership fee of $25 per month for using the 100-person capacity cafe, with members getting free over the counter marijuana from bud tenders, with the cafe remaining open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.. The cafe will only serve food, as it does not have a liquor license.
Oregon has about 21,000-patients, who have registered for permission to use marijuana for medical purposes, as doctors have been prescribing marijuana for a number of illnesses like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Tourette's syndrome.
However, it is still illegal to grow, possess, distribute or smoke marijuana under U.S. federal law, which does not make any distinction between medical and recreational use.
