H1N1 Drug Tamiflu PricesVary Widely For Same Dose
USA Today reveals, some pharmacies are charging three times more than others for the in-short supply liquid form of H1N1 drug Tamiflu meant for children, which fact is under investigation by at least two state attorneys general.
In a phone survey of over 100-pharmacies in 6-states, USA Today found, the out-of-pocket price for filling the same liquid Tamiflu prescription ranges from $43 to $130.
Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is investigating the price variations in his state, as is Attorney General Jim Hood from Mississipi.
Swiss drugmaker Roche has been focusing on manufacturing easier to produce Tamiflu capsules, but due to the shortage of liquid, some pharmacies have begun to make their own by mixing Tamiflu capsules with a sweet syrup. Children find it easier to swallow liquid Tamiflu that comes in lower doses.
Research Group, the Kaiser Family Foundation reports, over 2.2-million children under six years of age have no health coverage. Following are some of the prices given to USA Today for the same liquid dose of Tamiflu for children:
" Pennsylvania: $49-$94.
" Louisiana: $43-$110.
" Michigan: $49-$94.
" Kansas: $49-$99.
" Colorado: $65-$120.
" California: $55-$130.
Several L. A.-area stores' prices were also surveyed, showing at Costco's the capsules cost $89; $95 at Walgreens; and $110at CVS, while they cost about $100 at Capitol Drugs in West Hollywood.
And, no generic equivalent of Tamiflu means, some insurance companies are covering very little of the cost.
The concern about swine flu and seasonal flu is responsible for the huge demand for the anti-viral drug Tamiflu, leading to Tamiflu prices getting out of control, as some unscrupulous pharmacists try to take advantage of the fact.
