‘Strictly Come Dancing Therapy’ Halves Hospital Stays
Hilotherapy involving the circulation of cool water through adaptable cuffs fitting most parts of the body and face and currently on trial by the NHS, has also been used by Jade Johnson, a Strictly Come Dancing contestant and Olympic long jumper, including David Haye, WBA heavy-weight boxing champion.
Hilotherapy is known to reduce swellings and pain, even as it avoids the risk of nerve and tissue damage caused by the extreme ice and gel pack temperatures. Using the Hilotherapy system makes it possible for the cuffs to be set to the required degree, thus controlling the temperature applied to the wounded area.
Olympic long-jumper Johnson, was forced to quit this year’s Strictly Come Dancing series, after suffering a knee injury and aiming to reduce scar-tissue, she underwent extensive Hilotherapy treatment, and despite a partial ligament tear, she was back to dancing within days, although the BBC physiotherapist refused to let her perform.
The revolutionary treatment also helped Haye to recuperate from his injuries.
Currently, a 100-patients in Ulster Hospital in Northern Ireland who have undergone surgery for correcting injuries and defects in the head, neck, face and jaws are being given the therapy, and already preliminary results on 30-cases have found a 50% reduction in hospital stay.
Norman Waterhouse, a top craniofacial expert and former President of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said: ‘There is good evidence that this technology has been effective in reducing bruising and swelling after major facial surgery. Early results on facelift cases have been very encouraging.’
Hilotherapy will not only revolutionise medicinal therapy, it is also applicable to a wide number of fields, such as, sports injury, plastic surgery, maxillofacial and orthopaedic surgery, including a number of other applications.
Hilotherapy is also useful in the recovery room, for post-traumatic use and for relieving chronic arthritis and migraine pain.
