Scotland’s First Cancer Research Centre Opens
The launch of Scotland’s first Cancer Research UK will be in Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, focusing on developing treatments for bowel, breast and skin cancer, including building on the development of highly advanced image-guided surgical techniques.
Over £7.5 million a year will be contributed to the project by the charity, with experts from Dundee University, Cancer Research UK and the NHS collaborating on improving the lives of cancer patients in Scotland.
The Centre’s launch coinciding with World Cancer Day 2010 will aim to raise cancer prevention awareness, and by building closer links between scientists and doctors, it is hoped pace of research will increase, resulting in improved treatments for patients.
Dundee’s new Cancer Research UK Centre joins those in Cardiff, Newcastle, Belfast, Liverpool and London, all focusing on different areas of research and it is hoped Glasgow and Edinburgh will eventually get their own centres, as well.
According to Cancer Research UK, about 27,000 cancer cases are diagnosed in Scotland every year and over 15,000 cancer related deaths each year.
It will focus on developing treatments for bowel, breast and skin cancer, and build on the development of highly advanced image-guided surgical techniques.
