Haitian Quake Baby Needs Vital Operation
Three-month-old Landina Seignon severely injured in the Haitian earthquake could die within a week unless she can be flown to the UK for specialist head surgery.
Plucked from the rubble of a hospital, originally Landina was being treated for a burn.
However, she has also suffered major head injuries with burns to her head, and has had her right arm amputated after the collapse of the hospital that killed an orthopaedic surgeon along with 20 nurses.
Currently, she is being treated in Port-au-Prince by a British doctor, David Nott. She requires urgent medical evacuation, however, without any official papers or family surviving, she first needs permission to leave the country.
The world and the Haitian government are working to help her get the surgery she needs, with several agencies, including one private individual offering to help with the flights, so that she can get the urgent medical treatment required.
Charity UNICEF is following up with MSF and Haitian authorities, with the Foreign Office saying there is hope the baby who is guardianless and with no one to look after her, may be allowed to leave Haiti, soon.
At the moment, the most important thing is for government approval and sponsorship in terms of guardian protection to fly the baby out for specialist treatment.
