GOP Ideology Driving Republican-Led Legislature's Agenda
It has been a triumphant four weeks for the Republicans, as Florida legislators midway during their 60-day session, using a simple election year recipe involving sprinkling of a little policy, followed by plenty of politics, have spared businesses from massive hikes in unemployment taxes, including $80 million in business tax breaks. As for party-line votes, the resolutions passed by them not only crusade against health-care reform, but growing deficits in Washington, also.
They are also working to limit class size mandates, including passing three conservative issues i.e. new limits on lawsuits, more protections for gun owners and a union-busting plan to end teacher tenure, in the Senate.
In these four weeks, the Democrats have witnessed crushing defeats, ending with many of their ‘good government’' and consumer bills dead or dying.
The bills the Republicans refused to consider include: anti-corruption measures allowing prosecution of public officials for taking bribes, increasing criminal penalties for public officials failing to disclose financial information, as well as, banning legislators from voting on bills resulting in personal gain.
The Democrats have also failed to be heard on measures for federal dollars to pay for children's health insurance and unemployment, allowing the budget process to be more accessible to the public, as also increasing public access to government records.
But, the Democrats are not the only ones to have trouble with their good government bills, so are the Republican sponsors also. Their high priority bill for easier access to public records, including making it cheaper for the public to obtain documents, failed to get a hearing in the House.
