Judge passes judgment but next move unclear
A judge at a federal court said this past week that officials involved in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta irrigation project must consider the changes both fish and human will face. The project will bring more water for farmers for their agricultural uses.
Oliver W. Wanger, a United States District Judge passed his judgement which then brought forth many urban water users who spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of the project. People at the Westlands Water District saw this as a victory for themselves after the 134 page ruling by the judge was passed. "We're ecstatic," Sarah Woolf a spokesperson for Westlands said.
"The exact restrictions imposed, which are inflicting material harm to humans and the human environment, are not supported by the record," Wanger said "Rather, they are the byproduct of guesstimations and attempts to try to achieve equity."
Federation of Pacific Coast Federation of Fisherman's Associations’s Zeke Grader said many towns rely on fishing and on salmon for their daily needs and to earn a living. The judgement will devastate them as they will lose their livelihood and all towns relying on salmon will be largely affected.
"We will urge the court to uphold these protections for salmon and the fishing and tribal communities that depend on them," Doug Obegi, of the Natural Resources Defense Council said. "Weakening those pumping restrictions will jeopardize those species."
Tom Birmingham, Westlands' GM said the water pumping at the delta is at a minimum even though the melting snow is gushing into the river. Many environmentalists have expressed their concerns about the endangered species of steelhead and salmon in the area.
