Fossil Leviathan Whale Discovered
Fossil hunters from Europe have discovered one of the biggest predators to have ever lived, they have discovered a whale that not only devoured other whales, but also probably anything it had an appetite for.
According to a study published by the journal Nature, the recently unearthed fossil sea monster that lived around 13 million years ago on top of what is now a Peruvian desert, when the desert was under water. The scientists have named Leviathan melvillei, in homage to Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick. Leviathan means sea monster and melvillei refers to Herman Melville.
The whale which is as big as a modern day male sperm whale measures around 60 feet in length, and lived alongside the largest sharks ever known.
However, whereas modern sperm whales primarily feed on squid, the Leviathan has large teeth, some measuring over a foot, which suggests it hunted more challenging prey, perhaps, including other whales.
