New York City Has High Levels Of West Nile
According to the Health Deparmtment, except for Manhattan, high levels of the dangerous West Nile Virus have been detected in every borough of New York city.
There have been an unusually high number of mosquitoes testing positive for the virus at this point in the season, however, though no human cases have been reported, yet.
An alert was issued Friday to medical providers citywide, asking them to look out and report possible cases of West Nile virus. The Health Department hoping to reduce mosquito populations will carry out adult mosquito control spraying in affected residential and non-residential areas of Queens, Staten Island and the Bronx, next week.
Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health Commissioner said warm standing water provides the ideal ground for mosquitoes to breed in, and the three heat waves experienced this summer make it vitally important to reduce standing water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. He also asked people, especially those 50 years or older to reduce exposure to mosquitoes, by wearing repellent outdoors in the evening, the time when mosquitoes are most active.
· Use an approved insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (not for children under three), or products containing active ingredient IR3535.
· Ensure windows have screens, and repair or replace any tears or holes in them.
· Any standing water should be eliminated from your property and containers that collect water should be disposed off. Standing water is a direct violation of the New York City Health Code.
· Roof gutters should be cleaned and drained properly.
· Swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs should be cleaned and chlorinated. They should be kept empty and covered when not in use; all water collecting in pool covers should be drained.
· Call 311 to report any standing water or visit website www. NYC. gov.
· A doctor should be seen right away, if you think you have West Nile virus symptoms like headache, fever and extreme fatigue.
