Influenza Death In Malaysia Leads To Hundreds Quarantined
According to officials the death of a trainee due to an influenza-like illness has led to almost 2,800 people being quarantined at a police training centre in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
The death of the 25 year old police cadet Tuesday from viral infection has seen the training facility sealed off.
Nearly 2, 000 trainees and 850 staff workers are being monitored for flu-like symptoms by officials from the health ministry.
Currently, there are 31 cadets being treated at a nearby hospital, and all patients are reported to be in stable condition.
Zulkifli Mohamed, the centre’s commander said around 412 trainees who were in direct contact with the adenovirus affected have been isolated in a separate area. The training facility, he said will only be re-opened after receiving clearance from the health ministry.
Victims of the adenovirus experience symptoms similar to flu, ranging from mild respiratory infections to pneumonia. Infections occur through direct contact or transfer of bodily fluids.
Around 32 officers and 8 doctors have been stationed by the Health Ministry in Pulapol to monitor the situation.
