More details emerge about Google/Firefox search deal
Close on the heels of a recent AllThingsD report that the Google/Mozilla Firefox search deal is worth $300 million a year, new details emerging about the deal have highlighted that the agreement is actually much more money- spinning than before.
According to new reports about the deal, under which Google will become the default engine for the Mozilla Firefox browser, it was somewhat of an understatement to term the renewed three-year deal between Google and Mozilla as a “significant and mutually beneficial revenue agreement.”
Other than the fact that Mozilla will net a total of over $900 million over the span of the Google/Firefox search deal which was announced by Mozilla on Tuesday, there apparently are much bigger numbers involved.
Thanks to the search deal with Google, Mozilla will get much-needed funds for working out a growth strategy for its business. While $100 million of Mozilla total $123 million revenues last year had come from Google, the renewed deal will give Mozilla a three-fold increase in its revenues from Google next year.
The tripling of its revenue with the search deal with Google will make Mozilla a big winner in the agreement. The cash which the company will accrue from the agreement can be used for funding some of the company’s other projects, which – as per Mozilla Messaging CEO David Ascher – include smartphones-specific Firefox OS Boot2Gecko; the identity-based BrowserID substitute for Facebook Connect and Google Account credentials; and Apps initiative, aimed at assisting developers to write programs which are compatible with all devices.
