Welsh Government launches Campaign to Curb Smoking Habit
A recent report reveals that Welsh government has launched a campaign that aims at bringing the smoking habit to a considerable low level from the level at which it had been prevailing. The government is aiming to protect young children from adopting smoking habit from their parents.
It has been found that the government’s campaign has been planning to relax the ban of cigarettes for film and television actors. According to the government, smoking should be allowed in television programmes and films that are made in the city. The reason behind the same is the England film and television industry, wherein actors are allowed to smoke despite ban of smoke in the nation.
Thus, the government in Wales is thinking to exempt the television actors and film artists from smoking ban that is applied everywhere else at public places. However, charities warn that this step could normalize the habit of smoking in the nation again. Julie Barratt, Director of the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health in Wales, has rightly remarked, “The restriction on smoking in performances was introduced on solid health grounds and there is no health evidence to support any amendment to or dilution of the restriction”.
Also, the government campaign aims to reduce smoking habit from public places as well as in cars. For the same, it had organized a six-week consultation for making amendments in the regulations on smoking in public places. It is mainly focusing at eradicating smoking in cars in front of children so as to prevent encouragement of smoking amongst children.
In this regard, it has been claimed by First Minister Carwyn Jones that he would declare ban on smoking in cars in case the government’s campaign failed to achieve its mission of reducing the smoking trend.
