Public Smoking Ban Helps Quit Smoking
A study done by the German Cancer Research Centre has acted as a myth dispeller that ban on public place smoking does not lead to rise in home smoking. The study that has been published in the journal Tobacco Control has dispelled the myth that is prevalent since 2007 when Wales faced public smoking ban.
It was thought that the ban increases the home smoking habit due to outside restriction to light a cigarette. However such is not the case, as ban in public places gives a much needed boost to avoid smoking at home as well.
The study researchers revealed that ban on public smoking is not the only factor to curb home smoking. There are many other factors as well such as new born arrival at home, children presence, supporting atmosphere which supports not to smoke at home and encourages them to leave the habit.
A survey was also being conducted which involved more than 4,600 smokers from different countries like Ireland, France, Germany and the Netherlands. The survey has revealed that enrolled volunteers have witnessed change in their smoking habit since the public place smoking ban has come into effect.
Initially when public smoking was not active, these smokers used to smoke where they want and home was not an exception. However, tables turned completely when the ban was levied. Constant scrutiny helped them to leave smoking to a great extent and they noticed the same thing at their places as well.
The study researchers affirmed, “In fact, the findings support the ‘social diffusion hypothesis’ – banning smoking in public places may stimulate smokers to establish total smoking bans in their homes”.
Supporting the study, Elen de Lacy, who is Chief Executive of anti-smoking group ASH Wales, told that the study has reinforced their belief and it has been clear that the Wales Government decision was not wrong in 2007.
