Gay Teens Need Support From Friends and Family
In a recent report, it has been revealed that gay youngsters need all the support they can get from family and friends to keep them away from shirking from accepting their identity, and ultimately inclining towards committing suicide.
It was revealed in a research done by Brian Mustanski, from the medical social sciences from the Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, that those teens who have a good relationship and understanding with their parents about their sexual identities, can maintain calm in the turbulent times they might have to face due to the same. They are the ones who wouldn’t go up to the extent of ending their lives, or even think about it.
Many gay teenagers tend to feel lonely and left out and this pushes them towards wanting to end their lives eventually. They can indulge in self harming activities and this can be stopped with the help of effective support from family and friends.
Humans live for acceptance by others around us. All one want is to be accepted by people around them. The gay people, just after revealing their identities, tend to feel they are being discriminated with. The support and acceptance in the family of the person will definitely prove to be a pillar of strength through the tough time.
"Our research shows how critical it is for these young people to have social support and for schools to have programs to reduce bullying. We believe this will help save young lives”, said Mustanski.
There is need for more awareness campaigns for people to understand how the parents and friends of the gay teens need to support them through all odds, and learn to accept them for the person they are, not according to their sexual choices.
