Hong Kong - Thirty two cats and dogs were burnt to death Monday in an arson attack on the home of a Hong Kong animal lover who took in strays, police said.
Ten other animals survived the blaze in the early hours of Monday morning at the home in Kam Tim in Hong Kong's rural New Territories near the border with China.
Firemen said a total of 42 animals lived with the owner in the house. They said the blaze was started deliberately in several locations simultaneously.
Police were investigating whether the fire was started by someone with a grudge against animals or a disagreement with the owner.
Densely populated Hong Kong, which has a population of 6.7 million, has seen a boom in pet ownership in recent years and is also home to an estimated 25,000 stray dogs. (dpa)
