US, Angola sign AIDS agreement during Clinton visit
US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, continuing her extensive Africa tour, on Monday met with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos in Luanda, with the two leaders signing an agreement for increased US help in fighting AIDS.
Angolan media said the meeting between dos Santos and Clinton lasted about an hour, coming on the second day of her visit to the country and prior to her scheduled departure for the Democratic Republic of Congo, the fourth leg of her tour of Africa.
Under the agreement, Washington is to increase by 10 million dollars its support for Angola's efforts to fight AIDS.
After her arrival from South Africa on Sunday, Clinton had praised Angola's having carried out successful legislative elections in 2008, while at the same time urging Luanda to adopt a new constitution, investigate human rights issues and hold presidential elections.
Angola is the third stage of her 11-day, seven-country Africa tour that began in Kenya on Tuesday.
After Angola, Clinton continues her tour in Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Liberia and Cape Verde.
