Enel North America received 1 million dollars for geothermal research
Enel North America, along with its partners from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Research Institute of New England Research, received funding worth 1.02 million dollars from the Ministry of Energy of the United States. The subsidy is intended for research, development and demonstration of next generation geothermal technology.
The aim of the research is to apply technology in the projects of Enel North America and especially in the geothermal field Fort Cove in the state of Utah, and the opening of new geothermal resources.
Geothermal fields are a reliable source for energy production. Currently the U.S. has installed 2500 MW geothermal power. Recent studies indicate that there is potential for another 30 000 MW in 13 U.S. states, including Utah, Nevada and California, where Enel North America is present.
Enel is the largest energy company in Italy and the second in installed capacity in Europe. It produces, distributes and sells gas and electricity in Europe, North and Latin America.
Over the next five years (2008-2012) the company will invest 7.4 billion euros in the development of renewable energy sources for the search and development of new environmentally sound technologies.
