European Union decided to suspend the sanctions against Cuba, said Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner, cited by Reuters.
This decision was taken at the working dinner of the 27 EU member states in Brussels.
The sanctions have been in force since 2003 and their gradual elimination is a sign of the positive attitude of the EU towards the reforms, carried out by Raul Castro.
The sanctions were imposed because of information for political persecution of the system on the island.
Despite their decision, ministers have decided to continue insisting on more reforms and the road to democracy in Cuba.
According to NGOs in Cuba there are currently about 230 political prisoners.
