Fight against cancer event

In an attempt to control cancer, Canadian Cancer Society is investing $ 49 million towards research alone. Ontario could face a cancer crisis which experts feel could be due to the ageing and growing population. Funds have been raised with the help of volunteers and supporters who via the Cancer Society Relay for Life hope to raise upwards of $ 200,000 in a 12 hour event.

Queen Elizabeth Field and Jo Forman Track saw thousands of supporters line up to help raise money for cancer research in Canada. The party which continued through Friday night has local musical performances, a moving ceremony of lighting luminaries in memory of the loved ones who lost their battle against cancer as well as survivor stories.

The last decade has seen a decline or stabilization in cancer in most cases except lung cancer in women. In the 1960’s one out of three survived cancer while today the figure is 62%.

Researchers across Canada are working on methods to help screening, and early detection of the disease as well as prevention, treatment and care.
