IOC happy, not bothered, by Google's Olympic doodle

Google faces no trouble for its use of Olympic symbols as officials are happy that the leading internet search engine is prominently featuring the Beijing Games.

The use of Olympic symbols such as the five rings is officially reserved for Olympic sponsors, who pay millions of dollars and are guaranteed exclusive rights for it.

Google opened the Olympics on Friday by using the five Beijing mascots carrying the Olympic flag with the rings on it as its trademark doodle of the day.

"It is traditional for Google to reflect on global events. It is a natural editorial choice," said International Olympic Committee spokeswoman Giselle Davies.

"It reflects the fact that the world is watching China."

Saturday's doodle on the German site was a cyclist, highlighting the top event of the day, the men's cycling road race. Google offers various tools with medals tables, news, maps and other items for the Beijing Games, which run until August 24.
