Increase In Malaria On Mount Kenya Blamed On Global Warming
According to a team of researchers funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DfID), global warming is to be blamed for the seven-fold increase in the malaria cases on Mount Kenya.
In the past 20-years, the average temperature on the mountain has risen by 2-degrees Centigrades, allowing the disease to crop up in the higher altitude areas, with the local population having no or little immunity to the disease.
Origin Of A Tasmanian Devils’ Cancer Type Discovered
Tasmanian Devils, small marsupials, the size of a spaniel and to be found on the Australian island of Tasmania, could become extinct having become the victims of a strange cancer of plague like proportions, in recent years.
Reporting their study in the journal Science, Australian scientists believe they may have discovered the origins of the cancer, findings that throw light on the way cancer cells can free themselves from the host of their first emergence. In practical terms, they could help in the development of vaccines for saving the little devils.
Worms May Help In Parkinson's Study
Dundee University researchers will soon be under-taking a study of C. Elegans, a simple worm as scientists believe worms may possibly hold the key, as to why some people develop Parkinson's Disease.
Apparently, worms including those involved with inherited Parkinson's, share 50% of their genes with humans, and by studying them it could be worked out why the condition causes patient's brain cells to die.
Sperm Genes Possible Explanation For Women's Longevity
Aaccording to a Japanese study published in Human Reproduction, a European journal, genes in sperm may possibly determine why female mammals outlive the males.
The researchers found female 'bi-maternal' mice produced from the genetic material of two different mothers by manipulating DNA in mouse eggs to make the genes behave like those in sperm, seemed to live significantly longer than those with a normal maternal and paternal gene mix.
Genzyme's Pompe Drug Has Been Rejected
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not given its approval to Genzyme Corp.'s new drug for treating Pompe's disease, a rare muscle disorder, until and unless the drug manufacturing firm addresses production deficiencies at its Allston Landing plant in Boston.
The FDA ruling comes after it made an announcement last week about having found foreign particles like fragments of stainless steel, including bits of non-latex rubber in vials of several Genzyme products, including Cerezyme, its best selling Gaucher disease treatment.
Mutant Gene Holding Key To A Long And Healthy Life Discovered
A new study has discovered a mutant gene that could possibly be the key to living a very long and healthy life. Scientists from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the U.S who conducted the study say, finding a clear link between living to be a 100 and inheriting a hyperactive version of an enzyme that repairs and prevents cells from ageing, could lead to producing anti-aging drugs that stimulate the enzyme.
Effectively, the body organs of centenarians are constantly being repaired, as opposed to normal people whose cellular control centres wear out in time.
Leaks Blamed For Gut Disorder
According to researchers in the UK, genetic defects responsible for a leaky gut are the main cause of the disorder known as inflammatory disorder ulcerative colitis, which causes rectum and colon ulceration, though its exact cause cannot be pinned down, yet.
The latest Nature Genetics study based on gene analysis of 12,700-people, and which compared the genomes of 4,700-people with the condition to those of 8,000 healthy people, linked the disorder to four genes, all of which play a significant role in keeping the intestine lining healthy.
