Russia offers help to China after earthquake claims 8,500 lives

New president of Russia Dimitry Medvedec sent a note to China's leader offering help in rescue and rebuilding work after Monday's earthquake that has claimed minimum 8,500 lives.
Dmitry Medvedev told Hu Jintao in a telegram that if it was necessary Russia was ready to provide help in undertaking the consequences of that disaster.
As it was reported earlier more than 900 students were buried under the collapsed buildings as the earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale shook China's southwest province of Sichuan.
Xinhua news agency reported that it was still difficult to estimate the scale of the demolition, as telephone links of the province had been interrupted and around 80% of the buildings and other infrastructure near the epicenter of the earthquake had been distracted.
Premier Wen Jiabao visited the site to supervise the rescue operation. Army forces have also been sent to the area.
U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake started at 2:28 p.m. local time (06:28 GMT), and its epicenter was 57 miles (92 km) northwest of Sichuan's capital, Chengdu.
Tremors were also felt some 930 miles (1,500 km) away in the capital, Beijing, where people from offices rushed out into the streets when their buildings started shaking.
