Stoner consoled with Australian MotoGP victory
Australia's Casey Stoner won the Australian MotoGP on Sunday to ease the pain of losing his first world title to Italian Valentino Rossi.
Stoner made the most of pole position and led from start to finish at the Phillip Island track near Melbourne.
A fall in qualifying relegated Rossi to 12th position on the grid, but he thrashed through the field to finish second.
It was the seventh consecutive pole and the eighth this season for the 2007 world champion.
But the Ducati rider had already fallen too far behind in the points to trouble Yamaha's Rossi, who has already been crowned the new world champion.
Rossi overtook Nicky Hayden's Honda on the final lap, leaving the US rider to pick up third.
There are two more races left, the Malaysian Grand Prix and the season-closer in Valencia, Spain.
