Stoner on pole for Australia's MotoGP
Australia's Casey Stoner grabbed pole position Saturday for the Australian MotoGP at the Phillip Island track near Melbourne.
It was the seventh consecutive pole and the eighth this season for last year's world champion. But the Ducati rider can't catch Yamaha's Valentino Rossi, who has already been crowned the new world champion.
Rossi will start from 12th position in Sunday's race after crashing late in the qualifying session.
Yamaha's Spanish racer Jorge Lorenzo was second-fastest, followed by US rider Nicky Hayden and Frenchman Randy De Puniet, also on a Honda.
Rossi, the six-time premier-class world champion landed heavily on his right shoulder as he struggled to keep control in trackside gravel.
The flamboyant Italian will start from the third row of the grid, meaning Stoner is now tipped to repeat his 2007 victory.
