Indonesia's Bali island launches drive to kill stray dogs
Authorities in Indonesia's resort island of Bali on Tuesday launched a drive to kill stray dogs in an effort to contain an outbreak of rabies.
One person has died and tested positive for rabies while the virus is blamed for the death of five other people since last year, according to Bali's health department.
The department said at least 534 people have been bitten by dogs this year alone, sparking fears of a widespread rabies epidemic in a region economically dependent on tourism.
Death row Bali bombers file another appeal
Lawyers for relatives of three Indonesian Muslim militants on death row for the 2002 Bali bombings launched a last-minute appeal Monday, in a new move to save the condemned men from imminent execution.
The three militants - Imam Samudra; Mukhlas, alias Ali Ghufron; and Amrozi - face a firing squad for their roles in the bombings of two nightspots on the popular tourist island that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.
