Wales Institutes ‘Opt-Out’ Organ Donation System
According to the Welsh assembly’s announcement of its new plan yesterday, unless the families of deceased people object, their organs can be removed for transplantation.
The new plan was mooted after Sir Liam Donaldson, the Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales called it ‘a scandal’ that shortage of organs was causing the death of so many people.
Edwina Hart, Welsh Minister for Health and Social Services will negotiate with Westminster for introducing the system in 2010.
